- Tight for grappling. Gel is worth it.
These are much tighter than the "COMBAT SPORTS PRO-STYLE MMA SHIN GUARDS" I purchased about 6 months ago. Those were looser, had thinner neoprene with breathing holes, and used a different calf locking mechanism. As a result, they stretched, and eventually slipped a lot while sparring. I hope they will work better for a guy with bigger calves.
These have a thinner pad and have solid neoprene ankle to knee. They aren't going anywhere! They are definitely made for grappling, both thickness and tightness. Compared to other mma shin guards of this thickness, the gel is a BIG deal compared to foam. You can go shin to shin in these, both blocking and dropping one in solid when the other guy is blocking with his shin.
Getting them on and off is more work. I never realized my heel was so long? My secret is to rotate them so that the heel is sideways using the pad width as leverage. I also recommend wiping them down with Clorox type wipes after sparring. The solid neoprene tube is going to get funky quick if you don't.
In summary, get these if you are doing a fair amount of grappling and true mma sparring. Get the other a size down if you are 90% striking with the occasional takedown. And spend the extra $10 for the gel, it's worth it.
